Teenagers often have concerns about their appearance when they find out they need braces. For this, they can choose between clear or tooth-colored braces instead of metal braces or in some cases they may also have the option to wear invisible aligners if eligible.
Invisible aligners are almost undetectable, there no wires or brackets for people to see. They are convenient because they can be removed which is great for eating, brushing, playing sports, and playing musical instruments. Both Invisalign® and traditional braces will cause some discomfort when the teeth move, however, invisible aligners are more comfortable on a day to day basis since there are no wires or brackets in the mouth. Teens with clear or metal braces may need check ups by our orthodontist every month, while those with Invisalign® may not require as many follow-up appointments but will be required to change their aligners every two weeks.
While Invisalign® may seem like a great option to some teens over traditional braces, they are not suitable for every orthodontic problem and require strict compliance in order to work. They need to be worn at least 22 hours every day but removed for eating and cleaning. Also, the wearer needs to brush after every meal to avoid staining and tooth decay.

Problems with the teeth and jaw may be caused by thumb-sucking, injury and losing baby teeth too early. But the main cause is genetic. These problems are typically inherited from one of the parents or grandparents. If someone in your family needed braces, one or more of your children may also need braces
While there is no set age for a first visit to the orthodontist, it is recommended to have a child’s teeth checked between 7 and 10 years old. However, some people have their first visit when they are teenagers. Getting an initial consultation does not mean your child will need treatment or get braces immediately. It all depends on the situation.
During a child’s first visit at Redmond Orthodontics, the teeth, gums and bite will be examined during our free consultation with Dr. Baldwin. Contact our office today to schedule an appointment for your child!
The iTero scanner is a powerful handheld scanner or wand that’s lightweight and easy to maneuver. The wand generates detailed 3D views of a patient’s mouth, and is capable of snapping up to 6,000 frames per second! The technician or orthodontist simply moves the scanner over the teeth and gums of a patient and the images are displayed in real time on a computer screen. The digital impressions can be rotated, toggled, zoomed and manipulated in various ways that yield unique perspectives to help create a custom treatmen plans for a patient. The digital impressions are sent to external laboratories where they are printed and/or appliances are custom made.
At Redmond Orthodontics, Dr. Baldwin enjoys the benefits of the Itero scanner each day.
